Bob Chinns in Wheeling IL would have to be on my short list
I've eaten all across the country in hundreds of restaurants. The combination of ambience, service, and quality of the food is tops. It has broad appeal to a lot of people also.
But 'best' is a very fluid definition. In my travels I've discovered many gems in the most unlikely and even improbable of places.
Examples include:
-my favorite Japanese restaurant is in a strip-mall
-a dynamite Reuben sandwich in the badlands of Utah
-a Tijuana taqueria with a torrent of familiar flavors from my childhood. So good, I cried!
The point being is avoid franchise food for what it is. Boring.
