If you have lost or forgetten the XP administrator password, first reboot Windows XP in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeated as the computer starts up. Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes.

You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrators account and will be able to reset the lost password.

Just click the administrators user account, and then click Reset Password.

You will need to add a new password in the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and confirm by clicking OK.

All done, you have recovered the lost administrators password!

The Windows user password can either be cracked (recovered) or reset.

By default, Windows XP stores a user password as both a LM hash and an NTLM hash. LM hashes are very weak, and therefore, in most cases, a Windows XP user password can be cracked without much difficulty. The easiest way to crack a Windows XP user password is to use the following Windows user password recovery service:

http://www.loginrecovery.com/

You can also use Ophcrack LiveCD, although the free version does not support passwords with special characters:

http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

As an alternative to cracking the password, you can reset the password using the following tool:

http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Note that resetting the password will cause the user to lose access to any EFS-encrypted files it had access to. Similarly, some passwords cached in Windows will be lost. If you use EFS file encryption or need to preserve any cached passwords saved in Windows, I would recommend avoiding this approach.

You can use Linux to boot the NTFS partition to an active state, then modify the HIVE files to reset the password.

Restart and...as it's booting up...press F8. You'll get the option to for it to boot up in SAFE mode. Do that, and then you can go to Control Panel and change account info.

Do you know for sure that it was ever set or changed? Have you tried "admin"? It might work. If not, please see the link below.
