you can experiment with different shades of purple, brown, white/pearl, grey/silver, gold, beige/tan and pink depending on your skin tone and tan. you can even wear light silver/blue and green, but the amount and application may be a little tricky for a beginner to find a look that's right for them and the occasion. when in doubt, stick to more natural colors that emphasize your eyes rather than overpower them.
it's best to practice application and eventually you'll master the look and technique that suits your look or the one you're trying to achieve. you can always find instructions for a certain look or just get the basics of application in beauty magazines or even online. i would suggest practicing in the mirror at home before with several different colors and looks rather than rushing to get it just right on the special day. you can always wipe your eye clean and start over fresh. when in doubt, use sparingly. you can always add more.
instead of using just one color, you can try applying a few different colors to the designated areas and that will accentuate your particular eye shape to add dimension. for starters just go according to instructions or magazine pics and try to copy the image. you can even find diagrams for the application at the eyeshadow display in some stores. you can use the applicator that comes with the eyeshadow or may find it easier to apply with an eyeshadow brush.

I'm Asian too. :)
Asians look good in any colour, it's your attitude that matters the most.
1. Use a primer because it helps your makeup stay put for longer, and the colours are more vibrant. If you don't have one and you don't want to get one, that's completely fine. Just use foundation on your eyes as well.
2. A white shimmery eyeshadow to highlight your brow bone.
3. Eyeshadow and eyeliner of your choice. Then use your eyeshadow brush to dot a small bit of the white shimmery eyeshadow (same as highlighter) right smack in the middle of your eyelids, this really makes your eyes pop.
4. Curls your lashes and mascara.
5. Blush- smile to find the apples of your cheeks. Then use the highlighter color to dot a little bit on the highest part of your cheekbones and use your finger to blend a bit.
6. Lipbalm, and gloss/lipstick.
7. go to www.asianbeautyblog.com because it has video tutorials, as well as step-by-step makeup ideas. You will get heaps of advice from this site. I go there all the time.

I'm Asian/white, but I wear dark browns, but you could try pale pinks, lavenders, or neutral colors.
Its easy to apply, just take your eyeshadow brush (assuming you have one, if not go to sephora or ulta to get one) and take a color that matches your skin color (use this as a base) and sweep it accross your eyelid. After that take your primary color (the color that you would like to show) and dust that over the base color. Very easy. Hope I could help, Goodluck!

Usually, colors that contrast with eye colors work best. Try:
greens - mint or lime
blues - sky or aqua
purples - lavender or lilac
grays - pale or charcoal
Accents, or Evenings Out:
white or ivory
pink or peach
gold or silver
Go to beauty.about.com for really good instructions.
