It's kind of hard to understand over the computer, but basically you put alot of your weight into your outside iron and move that foot back behind the girth. Keep your inside leg on the girth and ask with both legs, slightly harder with the outside than the inside. Make sure that the horses nose is turned to the inside so that it has to pick up the right lead.

The easiest way to change leads if you get it wrong is to go back to the trot and ask again, or you could do a flying lead change. That would mean doing the same thing as asking for the correct lead, but trying to get the horse to change instead.

Well I ride western so I might cue my horse a little different but I've trained some and so far it works pretty good. Usually going counterclock wise is the best lead for most horses. Tap them with your outside leg until they go into a lope. Look at their shoulders and the inside shoulder whould be stretching out just a little farther than the other. If its not then stop your horse and start over. Sometimes the horse with turn their head in and put their inside shoulder out which will make them take the wrong lead. So on a corner turn their head and cue them with the outside leg to help them take the right lead. Sooner or later they will figure out what you want.

Inside leg on the girth, outside leg behind the girth. The inside leg asks for the bend and flex and the outside leg creates impulsion and controls the quarters.
If you then need to change lead as you went through the center of the arena, the inside leg would now become the outside leg and move from on the girth to behind it and the outside leg would come forward onto the girth.
You can tell if you are on the correct lead by looking at the shoulder and the inside front leg should be striking forward, clearly more obvious than the outside front leg.

kick them on the left side right behind the cinch/ girth. you also do that if it's wrong. to see if it is wrong or not you can look down (which i do, but it's kinda not really smart to do), and you can also kinda feel the lead if you think hard about it.
