name is hyphenated with mine and the father's last name. I have never asked for child support nor will I ever. Do I need his written consent to change my son's name? NOt the first or middle name, I just want to have my son keep my last name and drop the father's last name.

Don't think so... i am sure it depends on the state, but if you have sole legal custody, you should be able to change your son's name without any consent.

I think if his name is hyphenated on his birth cert and ssi card, you will have to have it legally changed to just your name. I went to a lawyer, he determined we had no contacft with my son's father for three years, sent three certified copies of my court request (I think it was called a motion) to change his name to his last three known addresses. They all came back unclaimed. I had a hearing and the judge allowed the name change. I then had to take the court order and get a new birth cert and ssi card. Good luck.

Yes. The one way you do it is to publish the date of the proposed hearing to change the child's name in both the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the major newspaper in the area of the biological father's place of residence. If he has any objections he will be compelled to attend the hearing to enter those objections into the record. Failure to appear makes the matter moot and the court will grant your request.
You might want to check with the Clark County Legal Aid Society for assistance in preparing your request to the court and those newspaper announcements.

You need to go to court a Judge has to do that, so sorry. Not even his written consent can change it. I have read some of the other answers and I know you want to believe them, but trust me you cannot do it that easily, you have to take it to family court.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!

OK My kid has his last name only, and she is 5 years old.

NOW, I went to court and asked to do it, they said I can ask and probably be allowed but the judge has to ask why and he decides.

If you just dont like the other parent and want to change they wont let you cause they think it will crew up the kid and legal documents etc...

But is he doesnt pay support, or visit, or its HYPENATED then its almost 100% that you can!! You have to pay 50 or 100 bucks I forget.

If he signed the birth certificate yes you need his permission.
The good part is as long as your willing to take no support, he'll probably sign. If he refuses slap him with a support order and demand all that is in arrears.

You have to go to court and change that.
*Sigh* I know several single moms who did that...they've all regretted it!!
