Laundry detergents are being made now is such a way as to chemically break down bacteria at lower temps than they did in previous years. You can literally use cold water wash for just about everything. I still do towels in hot water - force of habit though. Don't worry - if you dry your clothing with a temp for 30minutes you'll kill whatever didn't die in the wash - trust me, I learned that from some very cool Doctors! Good luck.

Detergent will kill some bacteria, but not all. Bleach is quite effective at killing most bacteria and some viruses so you could use one of the laundry bleaches available.
I wouldn't worry too much about the temperature - its not going to make much of a difference until you get it beyond say 60 degrees anyway.
Additionally, if you dry your laundry in the sunshine, the UV rays have an additional disinfecting quality.
Happy washing!

By putting them into the dryer or out into the sun. Washing cycle wise, I use seventh generation, which is a non-toxic brand of laundry detergent. I also use Eco-ver (I think) stain stick which is THE BEST stain remover I have tried. They work just as well as the typical name brand stuff, but are much nicer to the enviroment...a little of the stuff goes a long way.

A cup of white vinegar in your rinse cycle will not only disinfect, but also help remove soap residue that didn't get "rinsed" out, and act as a fabric softener. All this without ruining your clothes (with bleach) and saving you money on fabric softener. The vinegar smell goes away when the clothes are dry.

Modern wahing powders such as Daz or Ariel contain bleaching systems which sterilise your clothes at very low temperatures.
Look for powders which contain TAED.
These powders are not only excellent at cleaning at low temperatures they are environmentally friendly in that they save energy and are biodegradeable.
I have to take Christian D to task here.
The powders mentioned do indeed sterilise clothes as effectively as boiling them.
The same ingredients are used to sterilise medical equipment for re-use.
