I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Ltd that has been well maintained by the dealership. The day after I refueled, the check engine light came on. It stayed on for 3 days during normal driving and came off for 2 days. When it came back on, I replaced my gas cap and disconnected the negative cable for 15 min. When I turned the car back on, the check engine light was gone. After 2 days of normal driving, the light came back. I do not want to get ripped off by dealer. They can and will tell me anything!!! GOT ANY MORE IDEAS?

Take it to Autozone and have them pull the codes.....for free and then figure out what the problem is

I wish I could help. I have a 2003 Grand Cherokee and the check engine light has been on forever. My husband unhooked the battery a time or two and it worked for a while. But, my gas cap doesn't stay tight no matter how many times I click it. I guess I need a new gas cap. If you find out how, let me know.

did you buy an aftermarket gas cap? these dont work
if you did; take it back get a OEM one from Jeep dealer.
otherwise, have someone run the diagnostic...plugs into the computer. check engine deals only with emissions not something important unless you need to smog it
good luck

the best thing you can do is take it and have it scanned ,and find out whats going on with it,if the light keeps coming on there's a problem with a sensor or something on it,having it scanned will tell you if its a sensor, and auto zone or advance either one can do this free of charge, this way you,ll know what it is,turning it off will not fix the problem, unless you replace what ever is bad on it,good luck with it.

Take it to AutoZone and have them pull the code and then clear it. Otherwise, try your remove the battery cable trick again.

Good Luck!

You turned it off correctly but it is coming back on cause there is still a problem. The only solution is to have it fixed.
