I've got a ticking noise on my 95 Trooper with 74K that sounds for all the world like a sticky lifter. I've put ATF in it, put in Marvel Mystery Oil, even filled the crankcase up with Kerosene and let it run just above idle for 20 minutes. None of these work.
I went on a road trip of 200 miles, and that cleared it up for maybe another 100.
I had the intake cleaned with BG, and that cleared up the noise for about 3000 miles. Since I have been using CRC intake cleaner, and that works for about 100 miles.
A tech at a shop told me there was a TSB out on Troopers, to run zero weight oil in order to clear up a ticking noise. Another tech told me the first guy was trying to get me to ruin my engine.
Anyone have any experience with this problem on this vehicle? I would have the heads yanked and the valves looked at, but the only tech I trust refuses to work on Troopers. I don't have the time or the experience to do it myself.

Nowhere in that story did you once mention that the valves were actually adjusted. Has anyone actually tried that.

First impression is a valve lifter going bad, pumps up sometimes the sticks open and lets the push rob click against the rocker arm.Your additives swell up the o rings for a while then wash off.Take a broom stick or large long screw driver and go down the valve cover from front to rear with one end at your ear to listen thru and you'll hear the noisy one if its a lifter......George

You don;t have lifters. You have an over-head camshaft that actually pushes the valves down from above.

If you read the owners manual you will see that at 100K the valve lash is scheduled to be adjusted and this is best done at the dealership unless you know how to do this with feeler gauges.

Good Luck!

there is one other solution to this ,change the oil and run synthetic oil in it,i had one that done this and i went to Mobil one synthetic oil ,it took a few days and the valve ticking stopped, and has not done it since then, that oil is good and its the best thing you can do for that engine,we had a 89 trooper that did this also, used synthetic oil in it,and it worked well, good luck on it.
