I contracted my own house. After plenty of experience with people basically screwing me or performing unsatisfactorily, I finally wised up. I started to write out and audiotape everything. Seriously. When it came time to hire my tile guy, I actually told him politely that due to past experience, I've decided to record our conversation and get in writing everything he was agreeing to do. It's amazing how much the quality of work improves when you get terms in writing and record conversations. Chances are you'll never need to act further because they know they're being watched closely.

So, that's just one scenario. You also mentioned getting ripped off in general, like when you buy something or when you're at work. You have to start taking a more aggressive approach to demanding satisfaction. Tell yourself that you are NOT the guy who is going to get screwed this time. When you buy something ask lots of questions. If someone tries to take advantage of you, call them on it. People who screw others thrive on finding people to screw. Just don't be that guy.

If it is constant, then perhaps the problem is that you aren't specific enough in stating what you want. If you are reluctant to say "no, dammit, I want RED" or "I need it by the end of the day, if you can't do that, say so and I'll make another plan".

If people don't know what you want, they probably aren't going to give it to you.
