I assume that you are pulling them out of the manifold so:

Most of these bolts screw in and are made of a high copper content (like brass/bronze) bolt so they do not rust or fuse to the manifold. You should be able to remove them with some vice-grips by turning them out "lefty loosey". Counter-clock-wise.

If they are driven through the manifold (tapped in like a nail) and the threaded part does not run through the manifold, you can tap them out with a hammer or punch. New ones can be installed by tapping them in with a brass or plastic hammer so as to not get crazy and knock off a chunk of manifold, be gentle.

If you broke off bolts that are in the cylinder head you should first try soaking them with some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench and let them set awhile. Try some vice-grips. If you have a propane torch you can heat the studs to orange hot if they will not budge with the liquid wrench and vice-grips. Let them cool down for about 15 minutes and then try the vice-grips again.

If they do not come out with the Liquid Wrench and vice-grips and or the heat and vice-grips you might consider taking the head off and take it to your local machine shop so they can remove the broken bolts. Otherwise you might booger up the head and not be able to salvage it. Drilling and tapping new holes is not easy to do and is something that the machine shop would do as a last resort.

Good Luck!

You can try a vice grips pliers. Don't buy any other brand, this is one tool that brand name COUNTS. There is a tool made for this exact job, called a "stud puller" or "stud remover". Not a real cheap tool, but would cost less than paying a pro to remove them. Use some liquid wrench to help out, and when you put the new ones back in, use some anti-seize compound.

well try to double nut them, this means put one nut on tighten the second nut up against the first one and then try and turn the first one to remove the stud. If there isnt enough threads then you will need a good set of Vise Grips

Sears has a stud removing tool that should handle the job.

1. take two nuts and thread them on
2. tighten the 2 together
3. use the inner nut to turn the stud

you may have to use some kind of lubrication or heat....and be carefull not to heat the head too hot....try to keep the heat on the stud
