No, but I never did without anything I needed. My parents bought me back-to-school clothing and supplies, and birthdays and holidays were always a big deal. Plus, my parents would buy me gifts just to say "I love you."
However, my parents did not, and still do not, believe in giving allowances, because money is hard-earned. Handing someone money does not make them appreciate it.
When I was in junior high, my mom gave me the option to do household chores to get extra cash. And you know what? I didn't do it! Kind of suprising that a kid wouldn't want money, but I just wasn't motivated.
However, the result of all this is that I have a strong work ethic, and every child would benefit from what my parents taught me- to work hard, be honest, and put pride into what you do. From their example, I learned the importance of providing for family. If everyone adhered to these values, the American welfare system would not be so overloaded. Public assistance programs should be reserved for those who desparately need them, such as the physically and mentally disabled.
If you give kids an allowance, they will not have an appreciation for what it takes to earn money. Good luck raising spoiled brats!

Yes. It started out as $2 a week and then we got a "raise" to $5 a week. We were thrilled! I'm 45 years old. That wasn't a tremendous amount of money, even back then, but we weren't spoiled in the least. If we didn't do our chores, or if we were being punished for something, our "allowance" was in jeopardy. Occasionally, we could earn big bucks for big jobs, like washing and waxing the car. And it had to pass dad's inspection before we got the money.

Yes, I recieved $3.50 a week until I was 8 then I started getting $5.00 a week and now I work and I get $500, but between school and work, I have $400 to myself. I guess I saved up alot in the past years. LOL! :)

I get 5 bucks a week. That doesn't even pay for afternoon snacks for one day, my school rips us off with food prices. It's ridiculous. So I just bring pretzels and a water bottle most of the time, and save the 5 bucks.

No, I didn't get an allowance as a kid. BUT, my parents did hold spelling contests with me and my sisters. This should date me pretty good. We had a set of encyclopedias that had lists of words in back for spelling according to grade level. For every word we spelled correctly, they would put a quarter in a pile. Whoever spelled the most words correctly would win the pile. (If you missed one, you were out) It was fair because we had to spell the words in our list for our specific grade level. They probably did that for us once or twice a month. I have killer vocabulary skills because of that! Why couldn't they do that for us with MATH!!!
