The safest would be to put the bleach directly in the water before you put the laundry in. That way nothing gets overwhelmed with the bleach. I haven't been that careful and I pour it in after the washer has started on top of my whites. I don't think the cloth would last as long this way.

You dilute it with water (in a small plastic measure that you use only for bleach) before you add it, or you let the washer start filling without clothes, add the bleach and soap to the water, let it fill a little more so it mixes, and then put the clothes in and let it finish filling....
Or you use one of those detergents with bleach already in it.

Pour it in while the water is dispensing. Let the machine start to get the bleach distributed equally. Then add clothes.

Fill your washer with water, soap, & bleach, let it agitate a little bit, so as to mix the soap & bleach well, then add the clothing.

You just add it to the water when the washer is filling.

I use a powder all fabric bleach. No spills to deal with or spots on clothes. I just sprinkle it in with my detergent. I order it online, if you'd like info please feel free to click my avatar and email me, I'll send you the info.
Good luck!!!
