When the baby kangaroo first enters the world, it is only about 2 centimeters long and weighs less than a gram (which is less than 1/2 of a pound!)! It's about the size of a jellybean! Right after it is born, it crawls up its mother's body and into her pouch! The pouch is like the blanket your mother wrapped around you when you were a baby! The baby then attaches its mouth to its mother's teat for food. At this time, the lungs, brain, and other organs are growing and changing. The baby kangaroo stays in its mother's pouch for about 7 to 10 months! About the same amount of time we spend in our mother's stomach!

It looks like a red slimy slug. It's about 2 inches long. It will slowly crawl up Mom's pelvis to her pouch where it will resume development. If it falls off during its climb, Mom cannot save it.
