Are they safe at all? A bridge collapsed recently in Minneapolis due to neglect on maintainance. People are getting killed all the time because safety gaurd rails are not in place. All of the intersections have signals that are not timmed correctly and are not up to date.

Am I taking a huge risk each day just being out and about driving my car?

I thought this was supposed to be the greatest country in the world. Why would people die of a bridge collapse due to neglect? A man made disaster. Is this normal for a first world country? Are things the way they should be? Or is something seriously wrong here?

A reminder to all that don't know about this but the bridge disaster in Minn. MN. was 100% preventable. The State of MN knew ahead of time that the bridge nearly failed an inspection and was just barely in good enough condition to keep open. And what did the state do? They continued to neglect the bridge. They choose not to spend the money to replace the lost silt at the bottom of the bridge abutments which support the weight of the bridge.

You'll have to remember that next time when your in a voting booth.

Like a self-reminder...

Let's see, how would it go?

'I shouldn't vote for a government that is going to spend all our tax dollars blowing the s hi t out of people on the other side of the planet. I should look for someone that will keep every cent in MY country until we have good roads, health care, less homeless people.....

And to answer the question posted. YES, something most certainly IS wrong there

You are such a tool. We have the safest highway transport system in the whole damn world. When you consider the sheer number of cars and trucks that travel our roads and bridges every hour it staggers the mind that the gutters aren't running rivers of blood from vehicular carnage. Yes, that damn bridge should have been repaired before it fell. Yes, there are probably dozens of other bridges and roads across the country that need imediate attention. Considering we have more cars, more drivers, higher speeds and much more actual driving than ANY other country on earth our saftey record in the States is A+. Man made disaster? Are you joking? Less than fifteen people were killed when a MAJOR bridge and roadway collapsed. If that were to happen in India or Brazil or South Africa there would be hundreds and hundreds of deaths and the roadways and bridge would most likely be cobbled together once again vs being rebuilt with new, high tech materials and techniques that would last a hundred years. A man made disaster is somethin akin to that dam that burst in China and drowned thousands of people. A man made disaster is a ferry boat that capsizes in the red sea and kills five hundred people. A mine that collapses and traps six people or a bridge falling down that kills ten people is tragic, but is NOT a disaster.
P.S. -- to all the morons who seem to think that if it weren't for the war the bridge could have been repaired, get a clue. The war in Iraq hasn't taken ONE CENT away from the national highway fund, OR the states highway funding.

are the roads safe?? I would now have to say hell to the no! It is scary because in the United States...the most developed and rich country in the world, this kind of thing just should not happen. Come to find out there are 4 bridges in my area that I have to go over each once a day to get to and from work (2 on the way there and 2 on the way back) are built the same exact way the one in MN was built, and on a scale of 1 - 7 (one being the worst) they all rate a 3, meaning they are deficient! As much money as these states get from taxes this should not happen! There is definitely something wrong here, but unfortunately like everything else in the US, it will be pushed to the side until more poeple are hurt or killed...i mean if we fix the bridges we may take money away from the war in Iraq fund which is friggin pointless

Anxious? Relax only 8 people lost there lifes. And the truth will be told about what made that defective bridge come down. You are at more risk some drunk or drugged driver will crash into you 1,000's die each year. Over 6,000 teen age kids will die because Schools don't stress enough car control in the drivers ed courses.

yes it is safe. be more careful at night avoid unattended rest stops be aware since 9/11 ppl are paranoid and some foreigners make ignorant ppl nervous. of course don't put yourself in any situations that could lead to trouble. don't drink alcohol and drive and keep your car in top shape and have a cell phone and spare tire etc. if your worried about possible breakdowns you can join AAA or one of the auto clubs that have 24 hr service. have fun

road accidents happen cause some people drive un-safely. every once in a while something will fall and break, but that doesn't make the world dangerous. you have to take some risks.
