a multi party system is a big challenge , and severely needed, a two party system looks too much like an oligarchy. in your country average Joe America can never be elected , he lacks the right connections and money to grease the wheels to ever have a chance, no matter how honest and sound his mind is. look at Canada, you can grow up in poverty, have no connections, and still make it to the highest office, they also feature many parties that have a decent shot at winning, i admire Canada, and consider them the freest people and the most real democracy on the planet.

Challenges Facing Democracy

Perhaps the most important challenge faced by democracies and every other form of government as well, is the increasing inability to represent the desire and needs of their constituents. Increasingly in both Parliamentary and Republic forms of governments, the distance between representative and citizen is becoming more vast. Special interests are gaining more influence and unless there is a really massive outpouring of protesting on a given event, the elected representatives simply represent either their own interests/beliefs or those of the special interest groups. If this 'reality' continues unabated, then the people's view and participation in their own governemnt decreases.

1. The elimination of our monopolistic, corrupt two-party political system which puts a stranglehold on voters' freedom of choice and corrodes our democracy;
2. Hubris, arrogance and avarice among our people, and among the people in our government, which interferes with human decency, respect, unification, compassion, caring, love, sharing and civility within our country;
3. A lack of any moral compass, ethics, integrity, honor or humility among men;
4. Our love affair with the almighty dollar and all things material in a hedonistic society;
5. Failure of our leaders to stand up for what's right instead of standing up for what's politically correct.

Corruption!!! There's corruption everywhere, at all levels. We can't trust anyone anymore. We don't know who the good guys are.. if there are any.

The really rich are getting the money out of the country (e.g.Ted Kennedy) but they want to raise taxes for the medium class. Much of those taxes ends up in some corrupt politician's accounts in the Bahamas.

That, and the exportation of jobs, is what is going to destroy this country.

The middle class is the pillar of a country. If they kill the middle class, there will be nothing left.

Well the fact that the US is Republic & not a democracy might have something to do with it. But I'd say the greatest challenge facing America today is Bush's dismantling of the US Constitution which is the only thing that protects your freedoms. And the amazing thing is that most Americans don't even know that it's happening.
