1. At home listening to Radio New Zealand International on my shortwave radio. I found out half an hour before the U.S. TV networks anounced it.
2. At home asleep. My daughter called from back East and woke me up with the news. I lost two people I knew on the plane which hit the Pentagon.
3. In Yokohama Japan in my Navy quarters watching the coverage on Japan's National Network (NHK)
4. In the Philippines on an amphibious landing exercise with Second Battalion, 9th Marines. The landing craft started delivering live ammo instead of practice rounds and we soon learned the alert status had been ramped up.
5. At home in my Navy Quarters at the Navy Hospital in Okinawa.
6. At sea between Japan and South Korea.
