I think the greatest was Alexander the Greats, Had he not died so young I can only imagine what he would have accomplished.
The Romans never would have been an Empire I beleive had Alexander not died so young.
then in Modern day i know most hate the word but the American Empire. Yes I am Ameican but we DO control other lands that were not part of our nation, such as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and even up to WWII the Philipines.
We have done what no other Empire has done before it, we have become so tecnologically superior that like the Romans and Alexander, we will only fall from corruption from within or a natural disaster. NO nation stands a chance of defeating us.
Only a natural disaster or corruption will undo the USA. sure it is not a TRUE empire, but in a way it is one. I say this is a good way not negative, for i beleive the USA has done mroe good in the world than bad, and yes we have done our bad too. We are not innocent, but overall we are good people and a Nation.
OUR nation is in a way modeled after the Greek and Roman way of life and governments of Ancient times.

A few inaccuracies with some of the above posts.
The Babylonian Empire never covered the whole known world. The Babylonians were aware of Egypt, Persia, and India, all of which were outside the borders.
The Holy Roman Empire never controlled most of Europe. Charlemagne conquered modern day France, Belgium, the Netherlands, parts of Germany, Austria, and Italy. That's not most of Europe. And it collapsed two generations after he established it.
The Ottoman Empire was not pushed out of Europe by the Roman Empire because the Roman Empire had fallen long before the Ottomans existed. The Arabs were pushed out of Europe by Charles Martel and the Franks in 732, and the Ottomans were kept at bay for awhile by the Venetians and Byzantines, but ultimately Constantinople fell in 1453. However, the Ottoman Empire DID die, in 1917 after World War I. It is now a republic.
As for the greatest empire in history, it cannot be answered as an absolute fact. Yes, Rome was great, without doubt. However, it was an evolving and slowly expanding empire for the most part. Alexander's Greco-Macedonian empire and Temujin's Mongolian Empire were created during a single lifetime. So it all depends on how you define it. Alexander and Temujin/Genghis Khan are the greatest conquerors, but their empires did not last very long. In terms of legacies, the Roman and British empires are the 'greatest' historically.

Why Rome at 1, it isn't in the same league. You're talking about a few million people in total, at the time phenomenal but London was the first single city to a million then the first to 8 million and many times bigger than the nearest competitor anywhere. It was also the biggest for over 100 years holding on until German bombing forced 2 million out. The Empire created the US and won the world wars w. weapons the Romans could only dream of. No competition in modern terms.

The British Empire is the one which has had the greatest direct linguistic and cultural impact on the modern world... I'm including the colonies in this... and that means America too. Many countries around the world came into the modern era under the direct rule or direction of Britain and the British empire was the largest empire the world has ever seen (the mongolian empire was the largest continuous land empire, while the British was the largest ever in total size - globe spanning)

America is now the current one and is still there. the U.S.A. there is also The Holy Roman Empire controled much of Europe under Charlemagne. Actually The Corporation is the Greatest Empire as it controls not by force but with advertising and money and convinces people the consumers to accept it and finance it. It was the real power which enabled all Empires to function. It is an Empire within an Empire. It will continue to exist after each major power takes it's turn in controlling the world .Empires fall but The Corporation lives on in many forms.

No. I think it was the Egyptian Empire which lasted "longer" than any other empire ever HAS. It's influences "still" exist today in many avenues of life. Faith, commerce, trade, structural engineering, government being only a few. This Empire lasted for over 2,400 years and that's only "accountable" chronology for it is said that this empire was in existence for yet another 2000 years which were not recorded as mankind did not learn to read and write until Egyptians learned the art of hieroglyphics. (picture writing) Today's FAITHS would not have the fundamental beliefs they do without the contributions of truths in a Lord of Creation this empire made to the world. Though other religions "claim" to be "older" and that they were the "chosen," it is undisputable by evidence that this is a fallacy. Example is the best "teacher" and all one needs do is look to egypt and all that STILL exist to PROVE the it's truths........

name an empire that has not fallen, or will not fall. and then it can be claimed as a great empire.
Empires need not be land, but also the hearts and mind of people, and through out history, it was religion that was the greatest empire that stretched out beyond borders, and lasted even after the fall of many civilizations.

Rome without a doubt. Roman influence made the world what it is today and without it we would be a very different world
Britain close second, there influence on the modern world is also undeniable.
As to the other ancients, Mongol, Macedonian etc. Vast but little influence.

well it might sound weird ans strange but i beleive the muslim caliphates: the ummayad and abbassid empires were the greatest, because before 1258 when the romans destroyed baghdad much of the ancient greek works were saved in a learning culture that there was in the middle east of the day, the europeans got much learning after the crusades when they came into contact with muslim learning and all the works they had saved from the ancient world.

Size and influence, I'd say the British Empire. "The sun never sets on the British Empire." Add in their seat on the UN security council (as well as the US's seat, as a one time part.) Then look at their (Britian/American/Indian/etc) cultural influence in music, film, and a hundred other fields.
