My father has had first hand experience with Dewalt tools - his first 9.6 volt battery drill motor lasted around 10 years on the first set of batteries, and another 5 on the second set before the motor winding finally wore out. The first test after buying it was building a huge deck - it outlasted his friends Makita 12 volt drill motor ( also brand new) on charges and power. Dewalt tools are well worth the money - i have a few Dewalt power tools as well , my grinder works great - having it only a year , i bot at a garage sale a highly used 12volt Dewalt drill motor, charger, one battery and the flashlight attachment for $30 - i bot another new battery for $40- its still works great as well.
The brands i would trust are : Dewalt, Milwaukee, Craftsman for electric tools - Stihil for chainsaws and weedwackers ( pop has had a Stihl chainsaw for years- it hacked up a 6' diameter Oak tree with no problems).

See your other answer: these have steel bearings, are like a contractors models and some have clutches so you don't get "kick back" unless you've had a 2X4 shoved into your gut, you haven't lived.

You get what you pay for.

I have a 1/2 horse De Walt drill I'll give away, I almost got killed by it several times. I bought it on sale at a whim and it has a Kick-back that can kill you if your not expecting it. I torn my wrist joint out once on it and had to have surgery. Another time it twisted doing a door key hole when it hit a nail and it tore my shoulder joint out, I had to have surgery again. Once was on a ladder and it grabbed and tossed me off the ladder on a landing and into a wall.

It sits on a shelf, it probably is one of the most dangerous drills I have and, I don't use it anymore, it scares me.
