LaSalle named Louisiana for King Louis XIV (pronounced Louie) and his queen Anne (pronounced Anna). It was much larger then than it is today. The Louisiana Territory contained all of present-day Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota south of Mississippi River, much of North Dakota, nearly all of South Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, northern Texas, the portions of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado east of the Continental Divide, and Louisiana on both sides of the Mississippi River, including the city of New Orleans. The reason that Jefferson decided to purchase Louisiana was because he felt 'uneasy' about France and Spain having the power to block American traders' access to the port of New Orleans. Of course, the Lousiana Territory was later partitioned off into all these divisions and subdivisions, and in 1812 it was renamed the Missouri Territory to avoid confusion with the new state of Lousiana.

The territory of Louisiana as LaSalle annexed it to France extended from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Appalacians to the Rockies. It also included a sizable portion of Florida.

Louisiana is on the Gulf of Mexico.

LaSalle was looking for the mouth of the Mississippi. He was claiming all the land that the Mississippi River drained for the French King. This became the Louisiana Territory.

The Louisiana Territory was also much bigger than modern Louisiana.
