What does the WORD mean? I mean, in a literal translation. And what language is it? Can anybody help? Does anyone know where to look?

The boy's and girl's name Phoenix \pho(e)-nix\ is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "dark red". The mythical Arabian bird known as the phoenix is a symbol of immortality. The explanation of "Rise from the ashes" above is a good one. My son is attending Elon University - and the mascot is a Phoenix. They chose that after the school burned to the ground in the early 1920's and they rose like a "phoenix from the ashes" to rebuild the school.

A phoenix was a bird from ancient Egyptian mythology, so the word came from the Egyptian.

It can also mean to rise from the ashes. Like after somthing has been destroyed, it rises and lives again.
