I live in Europe and I've always felt that although the US is and remains (so far) the number one economic world power, it lacked several basic needs: a good healhcare system and a fine education system. Not to mention how African-Americans are treated there. So that needs to be resolved otherwise the US will join the evergrowing club of 3rd world countries.

Loss of the middle class is a byproduct of globalization, so, yes. Will it happen? Globalization is totally dependent on cheap labor but that is a finite resource so globalization is unsustainable in the long run. If it collapses prior to the middle class being mostly eradicated, then the process will slowly reverse in time.

We are becoming completely dependent on other countries for our needs. Meanwhile our job market is becoming service oriented and the jobs that require good educations are going to H1b's while our manufacturing jobs and other types of mainstay positions are leaving the country. Parts of our Constitution are being suspended and we're facing the constant threat of being attacked by savage beings from the dark ages. Meanwhile, we have no funds to fix our crumbling infrastructure. Maybe not so slowly. That didn't ease your mind at all did it. Mine either.

No country that has over 200,000 nuclear weapons and people willing to die for everything it stands for will ever become a third world country.

Madalena: I lived in Europe for over seven years through the military and blacks are treated no different here than turks are there. Europeans either think we are cowboys or gangsters, come and see what it's like before you spout off about that which you know nothing about.

i dont really think that we are becoming a 3rd world country... the technological advances are making us quite the opposite. if anything, i would say we might be getting too smart for our own good. however this reminds me of an ancient mayan prophecy that says "the world as we know it will end" in 2012. its kinda interesting, you should look into it.

a post-industrial country would not become pre-industrial.

regardless of all the things that have happened to this country, we're not going to wind up dirt poor and without even factory jobs.

Not particularly. We're still winners in the "copper haves" category. We'll be ahead as long as we have enough copper and others don't.

I think we are because some towns in the US look just like third world towns to me. I strongly believe that this is due to illegal immigration and their customs they bring with them from third world countries.
