Whenever available RAM is low, your PC will access virtual memory (which is VERY SLOW). Better to increase RAM so that your PC is ALWAYS fast and DOES NOT use virtual memory. 1Gb is great for Win XP.

Well, RAM is physical memory and virtual and page file memory is reserved space on the hard drive, sort of.

Anyway, 256 MB of RAM is like the minimum to run XP with. I did a clean install of XP yesterday and it used 300 MB of RAM at idle.

Extra RAM will give your PC an overall performance boost big time. Go for at least 1GB.

In all honesty, your computer should be on the shelf collecting dust. In your shoes, I'd go build a new system. You can build a
pretty nice high performance system pretty cheap right now, especially if you'll be re-using parts from the old one.

Ram would improve the overall speed of things. If you plan to upgrade... go with about 1 Gb
