Why is it ok for black people to use the N word to talk about themselves, but if a white says it it's racist? I mean, get some respect. I am not being racist here in any way, I just want to know why black people think its ok to call themselves N's even though many of their ancestors fought for their rights to be treated equally and not called things like that. I think black people who do that are a disrespect to their own culture. I don't understand why someone would want to do that?

As a black man, the word is not even in my vocabulary. I do not feel comfortable around people who use it regardless of race. If any fellow black calls me an uncle tom or "acting white" then to hell with them. You cannot act like a color.

Buy anyway, it is pointless to try and change it into a word of endearment. What we say will be used against us. If we don't want to be referred as one then we should make conscious steps to change our behavior as well.

I grew up around other black people who used that word in every other sentence. They were also very ghetto and obnoxious. I did not feel comfortable around them. I was always the observer and never the partaker. They were quick to say I "talked like a white person" also because I did not use the word.

There are various types of black people, we are not all the same. I am comfortable with my fellow black people who hardly use that word.

Oh, God - please help me. If I read one more question like this on Answers, I may just throw up.

It's a total stereotype that all black people use the 'n' word. I'm black, and I NEVER use it! No one in my family, nor do any of my friends who are black use it either. It's an ignorant, racist term that was created to further demean the black race. The fact that some black people, namely, some in the younger black generations, either don't understand that or don't care is pretty sad.

Of course when a white person uses the term it's racist. It was created to be racist.

There is SO much stereotyping on Answers that it boggles the mind. SOME black people use the 'n' word, not all, JAYCON!

Well, you got that right, Diamond Sunlight - you certainly do NOT get it! How do you feel any respect for people who don't respect themselves???? What a creative way of rationalizing your bigotry. I'll tell you how you do it - you start seeing people as individuals, not just a race. I can't think of anything more ignorant than thinking, "...there's a black person. I won't show that person any respect because the fact that he or she is black means they don't respect themselves anyway." WHAT kind of narrow-minded, stereotyping thinking is that???

It's sort of like us calling ourselves Yankees and singing that song 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' even though it was written about us in a derogitory manner. It doesn't hurt so much when a black man calls another man the n word. Just guessing. It seems like a black man wouldn't think the other black man had any reason to hurt him but when a white person says it, it's always an insult. It wouldn't have been if history read differently and if racism wasn't such a powerful force for destruction and degredation. I think these white racists should really check themselves to see if they really as superior as they think they are. Wanna bes and babies crying for attention. How can you feel any respect for people that don't respect others? I don't get it.

Who do you want to call n igger so bad that you had to ask this question? This is something you can unfortunately never understand. This started off as a disgracing word that your people used to keep my people down. Originally it was meant to take power away from the whites by using this word to refer to other Brothers and sisters as a term of endearment amongst each other. This has been taken out of context in the last 20 years. But still the fact remains the same. I have white, chinese, mexican friends that all hang out with me and in my crowd of friends and alot of them use the word n igga when talking and thats ok because we are close and we know what each other mean.

We call ourselves the N word because it just another expression for "my brother", "my homie", "my friend". The N word in the past during slavery had a bad meaning to it but we change it into something different. I unserstand where you are coming from but most of the time when a white person says the N word its offensive and plus it just doesnt sound right when a white perosn says it.

I believe that started because they were collectively trying to take the power away from the racists that used that word as a weapon. It became acceptable to be used by A.A's only as a way to Take Back their power.

I think the younger generations have lost sight of that purpose or simply weren't educated properly by the elders as to WHY that word became so widely used. It's a shame really, because I actually think they did accomplish what they set out to do, diffuse the word, but it's ended up being a derogatory thing used within the community now.

1. Anyone who said "because theya re pulling the race card".....I hope you die of your blatant ignorance. I'm going to explain this WHOLE phenomena in this brief little tidbit. Think of this: If a fat person calls a fat person fat, huge, lardo etc. it's not NEARLY as offensive as if a skinny person called the fat person fat, lardo, etc. So lets change the fat people into black people and the skinny people into white people. When the black people call eachother n igger it is not NEARLY as offensive as if a white person calls a black person a n igger.

This is a good question. I read a post about a black gay male making lewd references in regard to Martin Luther King. I don't understand their lack of respect in general. I believe this is the only race that engages in such extremes.

I am so tired of the same question over and over and over and over and over and over. I mean are you not the brightest tool in the toolshed and havent you heard this question before asked a million times from another white racist. Thats all thats on here. You know people attack me for going against all the white racists but my god thats all there is on here. Why must you look so damn dumb? Read the history of all the white bigots before you and you will know your answer. P.S. Get yourself out of the small white racist town and get some culture into your blood and then come back with an intelligent question.

Their ancestors fought for their right not to be called that by white people, specifically!
