bad?

But isnt self-consciousness a subset of self-awareness? And thus it's not that 'bad' besides if you take apart self-consciousness you get self and consciousness. Thus, it's when one gets conscious of self. But there's a baggage attached to it of negativity....

Self -consciousness is a preoccupation with oneself, rather than the philosophical state of self-awareness, which is the awareness that one exists as an individual being.

Self-awareness is the explicit understanding that one exists.

Self-consciousness = embarrassment deriving from the feeling that others are critically aware of you.

Self-awareness = having knowledge of self, including knowledge of interest, aptitudes and limitations.

Self-consciousness is considered bad as its not good to always go around thinking that people are being critical of you. You cannot possibly know what someone is thinking about you, its only your perception and in the end its what the worst you think of yourself you just assume others think that too. Which obviously isnt a good thing.

They are the same. The other (or an other) meaning for the word 'self conscious' is stage fright or social tension performance anxiety. Sometimes when experiencing that a person may feel an alien force attempting to sabotage or effect actions in the body and therefor the person tenses muscles in order to maintain control of their body, or to control sexual arousal or unbalanced dizziness or muscular dis-coordination.

Personal experience.

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

Self-consciousness is usually an embarrassment of things you say and do or how you 'think' you look to others.

Self-awareness is similar but it goes another step out as well as another step within.
Another step out? So far as the self-judgement goes 'but it doesn't matter'.
Another step within? It goes to the core of self-understanding without judgement - a more unconditional level of knowingness.

If you are self-conscious you are concerned with what others think of you. If you are self-aware you are concerned with discovering who you really are regardless of what anyone thinks of you.
