I am having trouble with the pattern for 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4...

What do I have to do with the number to get the next term?

I thought it would be +1 to the denominator, but the problem has to be adding, subtracting, dividing, or multiplying a number to get the next term and I can't figure it out.

Can anyone help me out?

You can multiply by (n-1)/n to get to the next term.

For example,
1, to get next term n=2
1 * (2-1)/2 = 1 * 1/2 = 1/2

1/2, to get to next term n=3
(1/2) * (3-2)/3 = 1/2 * 2/3 = 1/3

1/3, to get to next term n=4
(1/3) * (4-1)/4 = 1/3 * 3/4 = 1/4

The first answer is the most concise, but it has a typo. The nth number is given by 1/n. You have 1st-->4th numbers. So the 5th is simply 1/5.
