In Maine i've heard that mary jane is decriminalized, so is it legal or not?

It is still illegal, but will not be treated as a criminal manner. Other illegal activity that is not criminal includes littering, speeding, or double parking.

You will get a fine but not go to jail.

Decriminalizing something means taking the criminal aspect out of the punishment. For instance, you get pulled over with an ounce of weed, you can serve jail time for it.

If it wasn't criminalized, you may only receive a slap on the wrist.

No, it does not mean it's legal, yet.

Decriminalizing means reducing from a felony to a misdemeanor, you can get a ticket or be fined but it's still not fully legalized.
