Philip Carey has been battling cancer and, although he is still with us, he wanted to retire. The show did not want to replace Phil as Asa because no one else could play the character but Phil. They also did not want to just send the old guy upstairs never to be seen again and just refer to him once in awhile. The decision was made to kill off Asa because Phil isn't going to return and the powers-that-be felt fans needed closure with the character.

Phil Carey decide to retire from the soap and he has battled lung cancer for along time. He is still alive phil carey but decided to step aside from the soap. The writters deided that since his son Bo on the soap wanted to arrest Asa this will be a great idea to have him go that way Asa doesn't get arrested but he dies at the end. I thought it was a good episode but stay toned for tomarrows episode. We all know that people on the soap never go to jail unless they are going off the show.

Phil Carey who plays Asa retired last April. He's 82 and very much alive. His character had a bad heart so it was very natural for him to die that way on the show.

No, Asa has had a bad heart for years. My husband enjoys General Hospital with me so tell your hubby there are a lot of guys who watch soaps, many are pro athletes.

Phil Carey had lung cancer but recovered and came back to work. There were contract negotiations that went badly and he was released. That's why you haven't seen him in so long and why they didn't show a body or have an open casket. I'm gonna miss him!

Phil Carey (Asa) is not dead. One Life to Live wanted him to be a recurring character so he didn't resign his contract.

I think I'll just copy this answer from ? to ?.

Phil Carey is not dead. However, he was treated for cancer last year. Several years before that he expressed a desire to retire, but TPTB wouldn't let him out of his contract. When he said he wanted to retire this time, they tried to get him to accept recurring status, but he refused. The man is over 80 years old and I personally believe he deserves a rest.
