Try a system restore first. If that doesn't work, you'll need to reinstall the drivers for your sound card. It's usually located on a Drivers CD or a Restore CD that came with your computer

Go to your Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Hardware. Let the wizard run and detect your sound device. Since it was already installed once, unless you deleted the driver files themselves, Windows will detect the sound device and will check the list of driver files that it has for that type. It should be able to reinstall the existing driver for the sound device and have it up and running in no time. Check out the link below for further advice. Good Luck.

The CD with Word and Excel would be the Microsoft Office package and yes, you need the CD to reinstall.

you don't need to install a sound disk. Go to Start Menu: control center, sound options, Sound and Audio Devices, then go on sounds tab, pick a program event to install.

Restart you r computer. that wroks too.

No, you don't. Don't waste another second looking for that missing disk ... that's just frustrating. Instead ...

Right click on "My Computer."
Click on "Properties."
Click on the "Hardware" tab.
Click on "Device Manager."
Click on the plus sign next to "Sound, video and game controllers."
Ignore the lines that say "codecs". Instead click on the one that has the name of your sound card. (Mine says "Creative Sound Blaster Audigy", for example).
Right click on that, and click "Properties."
The proper name of your sound card will be in the space just under the "General" tab. Note it on a piece of paper.
Cancel out of everything, until the Control Panel is closed.
Google on the name of your sound card, plus the word "driver."
Look over the entries, and choose the one offered by the company that made your sound card.
Download the driver, and follow the instructions on the website to install it, which are usually just to double click it, accept the license, click "next" a couple of times, and reboot.

You're done!
