If you are talking about having a 'professional carpet cleaner' come in to do the work, ALWAYS use one who has an 'extractor' ... they get the carpet far cleaner with less 'water' being used than a 'steam cleaner' ...

There are no actual steam cleaners for carpet. They use a spray of water/detergent and a vacuum( extractor ) Doing it yourself don't rent at the supermarket. Find an equipment rental. Cost is slightly higher but the will have commercial equipment that will work much better, less time and less work. Bigger solution tank so less filling and draining. Probably cheaper for the detergent as well making up for the extra rental cost.
