Brittany doesn't know what she is talking about.
The reason some people are gay is not yet known. There are a lot of things being looked at as you mention. I recently saw a study showing second and subsequent sons were more likely to be gay than first born sons, suggesting something in the in utero environment. It is pretty well documented that there are difference between gay and straight people's brains, but the cause hasn't yet been definitively determined. There is also apparently a difference between gay men and lesbian women in the cause.
Wish I could give you some references, but I can't remember the numerous sources where I have seen the various information I have. Likely Discover Magazine is where I have read at least some of the information. You could try back issues of that magazine. It is science for the lay person and so understandable to the average person.

Genetically controlled (or hard-wired) behaviors are rare in changing environmants and common in stable environments. Only behaviors that are intrinsically and consistently beneficial become hard-wired because once they become hard-wired they can't be changed to react to a changing environment. Hard-wired behaviors have the benefit in that there is always the same response to an environmental stimulus. Therefore, if the response is beneficial, and beneficial all the time, then the individual with the hard-wired response is at a distinct advantage in that they will never make a wrong choice.
Conversely, if the response is not beneficial, it will quickly be lost. Homosexuality is clearly not beneficial and would not be passed along from generation to generation, so therefore it is NOT a genetcially controlled behavior.
However, it could be genetially influenced, such as a tendency towards alcoholism (or addiciton in general). I use this example because my familty has such a prediliction which I have to be aware of. However, just because I have a genetic tendency towards a behavior doesn't meant that I don't have a choice. I can chose not to drink, which I do. I believe that homosexuality probably has a genetic influence along similar lines.
Before anyone gets offended that I compare homosexuality to a "disease," (well probably too late for that), alchoholism is not a disease. It's not caused by a bacteria, virus, or other outside influence, and it is not contagious. It's a behavior, as is homosexuality. And both behaviors are abnormal.

You aren't a bad person. That's your opinion/belief. End of story. I hate how everyone gets so defensive over this. I think that gays should have their own rights and be able to get married yet I see all these people out here that support gays that slaughter and discriminate against those who don't. It's extremely hypocritical. You call yourselves supporters of equality and you slam those for having their own beliefs? I understand that a lot of people hated for this to happen but that's ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Yes, I don't agree with gay marriage. I don't think it's right. But they DESERVE that right to get married. There's no argument there. The end.

it's totally unknown what the cause is so I think in your project you should address all the theories and show the evidence.
there is recent evidence that a specific gene found in fruit flies called fruitless may be involved with making gay flies from Dr. Barry Dickson's lab. even more recent, evidence shows a lack of gender discrimination in mating in mice in new paper's from Dr. Catherine Dulac's lab. I think it would also be great to talk about the twin studies in which one person is gay and the other is not.

It's not necessarily a choice, but it's a weakness. I personally would look at a homosexual like an alcoholic, it's a serious problem that can be fixed and treated.... I have a friend that says he is a compulsive stealer and that he has a 'thieves mind'... does that mean he can't help but steal just like a homosexual? i don't believe so, yes i do believe there is an attraction for the opposite sex and yes there may be things that are specific to homosexuals, but there are also things in common among thievs and to say that they have no choice (like my friend claims) i feel is a way of justifying your action (a common human attribute that we ALL do)
