It depends what you want to achieve in the end. It won't take long to learn how to make a simple page without any sense of layout which you saw before 2000. You can learn this from books. However, it will take hours and hours of practise and experiments in order to achieve high quality site with good layout.

Website creation is nowhere nearly as easy as many people think if you want to achieve a high quality site. These days, you have to be careful with legal requirements, too, i.e.accessibility and copyright issues.

If it is a simple site you could make it online.

I am surprised of the answers above...
No one gives you a real answer!
There are plenty of books, but I would not advise the expenditure.
Go to www.w3schools.com.
It is free and has everything you need.
Start with HTML course "Learn HTML", the very basics.
Within a few days, you will be up and running!
One other advise:
DO NOT (I repeat: do not!) use ANY program that "make the pages for you", such as Dreamweaver or any other: it takes you a long time to learn them, and they convert what you have learnt into a very bad coding you will never understand. (and never learn the real thing!)
Start as a pro: use a TEXT EDITOR (notepad is the best!), and try the examples from W3schools.
You will learn how to write your pages, how to upload them to your server etc...
In no time, you will learn HTML, javascript, PhP and My SQL.
And these languages are ALL you need to know!
Good luck.

There are many good books on html, php and all other web programming languages. I can not remember the publisher, but there is a book on html, php and mysql database which includes the cd to load a full Apache web server onto any machine, you can then practice and design your pages before posting them to a site.

The best way to learn is to have a go. You need to obtain webpage authoring software (like dreamweaver or frontpage) and just go for it. It's not difficult and these authoring tools make it similar to writing a word document. You might be able to find a free authoring tool online.

Here is a 30day free trial of Dreamweaver.

I'm sure this will get you started. Good luck.

Im not sure if this is the type of thing that you are looking for. But i do know that there is a site called Piczo that allows you to make an account and start building your own website (just go on to yahoo and type in piczo)

Don't:

It's a waste of time, you spend lots of time learning stuff but then all you can do is have some text on a coloured background, get a program that requires no HTML to make a website, it looks good and is very easy!

Yes it is possible to learn how to design a website with a book.

Here is a good one.

Also go to different websites and right-click and go to "view page source" this will allow you to look at that websites html code.

(Notepad)
Using notepad on your computer (if you have windows) you can play with the codes (html and css) and save it as index.html and make sure you change "save as type" to "All files." This is a basic and inexpensive way to make website on your computer.

Simple layout you need on notepad.

Title to website when bookmarked

Everything in your website goes here in between the body except for your stylesheet (css)

if its simple html.. there are plenty of guides online.. even programs which generate pages.

all a html site is, is text with a few tags added e.g

hello

will print a heading called "hello"

or just use view source on other pages, thats how i learned back in 94-95 times.

It is best to find a mentor and learn by doing and learning from other people's mistakes.
