when I cut the old prong off and exposed the wires, i am not sure which color goes where. There is a green, black and white wire. Is the white the ground? And the terminals for the other wires are one gold and one silver does it matter which one goes where once the ground wire is attached?

Assuming you are talking about a 110 /120 volt cord (which is house current, even though you asked in the car category) green in the ground, white is the common and black is the hot!

Attach the black to the gold connector, the white to the silver. The green is attached to the third prong. Make sure your connections are tight, and no excess wire can touch another wire, and you should be fine!

First and foremost, it is important how you connect the wires. The black wire is the "hot" wire and connects to the gold terminal or in most cases gold screw. The white wire is the "neutral" wire and connects to the silver terminal or in this case the silver screw. The green wire as you may have guessed is the "ground" wire and connects to in most cases on today's products a green screw or connector marked "ground" or markings when looked at a certain way looks like the letter "T" with "two additional lines" running parallel with the top of the "T". If you bought a new prong the instructions should show a diagram. Hope this helps.
