i am taking birth control pills right now and have been for about the last 4-5 months. i understand that you are suppose to start the sunday after your period (is it necessary?) but let consider this: what if, lets say, i am on my period now-starting this sunday i dont take my new months pills til the following sunday. will it really throw off my system? i am mainly wanting to do this so i can time not have my period while on vacation but dont want to do it if it means taking risks. basically what i would like to do is to push the monthly timing a week forward-is that possible? will it throw off for the next months cycle? and if so how long does it take to get back on track? if you could help me out i would appreciate it, thank you.

If you skip a week of active pills as you describe (so there's a two week break between pills instead of the one placebo week), then you'd be at risk for pregnancy at worst, break through bleeding at best.

If you want to manipulate your cycles, just omit the placebo week and start the next pack right away. You might have some break through bleeding, but you'll be covered contraceptive-wise.

Speaking from experience here DO NOT do this!

First, you would skip your placebo week and immediately start on the new pack.

Do not do what you said and skip a full week without taking any pills. You are basically missing a whole weeks worth of active (hormone) pills. You do not want to do this.

Even if you do try to trick your period, you could have your period anyway, or have some spotting or breakthrough bleeding.

THEN, you'll have to deal with the next time you get your period. It'll be heavier and your cramps will be worse.

THEN it'll take forever for your cycle to get back on track with the pills.

I did this once and I won't ever do it again. It took me at least four to five months to get my period to start when my placebo week showed up, it would occur on my active pills.

Don't let your period run your life. Take tampons and midol and enjoy your vacation.

i dont' understand what's so hard about taking the pill. why would u alter the way u take ur pills? you've taken the pill for 4-5 months now, it should be part of your life, no big deal. periods come lite and with less cramps while on the pill anyway.. it shouldn't ruin ur vacation. sorry if it sounds a lil harsh but i think u should just take it the way ur suppose to everyday and not switch it up.
