Anyone can be crazy, that is a very lose term associated with any abnormal behavior. (What is defined at "normal" can be different for each individual.) Basically that means I might consider someone crazy that you do not. It is a term like "cool" simply because I feel one way towards something doesn't mean you'll agree. Insanity is a mental derangement; the person actually has a disorder or a chemical imbalance. The mental health of Edgar Allen Poe is an arguable topic - read up on him because he has some famous works that are (arguably) dark and deranged topics. He is very talented despite the gloominess of his poems. I wouldn't consider him crazy, insane - rather dark and possibly troubled.

He wasn't insane, he was psychotic in ways most of us are or could be if we checked with an MD.
Psychotics fueled with opium makes for some SWELL talent like that of Edgar Allen Poe and myself!

He's not crazy or an insane. He is more like an accentric professor on the loose with a kind of maddness that the world need. A talented soul...
Now, take a look at this.
Madness On The Loose.
Yes, the people say, madness on the loose, madness on the loose
So the people say…hey..hey..hey
There’s a madness on the loose.
So the people say..hey…hey,
And some people say madness on the loose,
Tho’ it’s madness on the loose,
There were times we do need madness on the loose,
‘Coz there is nothing to lose
Yes, we do need madness on the loose
To cut us a pathway for a winner’s stance
Yeah, madness on the loose, madness on the loose…
........May his soul rest in peace.....

He was a drug addict and prone to hallucinations.
Supposedly, that is where he got most of his story ideas.
A sad life, but his works have endured for many years and will for many more to come!

He was quite possibly neither (or he could have very well been both). What is factually known is that he was an opium addict and an alcoholic and died almost destitute.
