Future perhaps?

The first successful whole genome transfer (you can call it a transplant if you want) was just published in Science last month. But this was done in bacterial cells, who knows if eukaryotic cells could do this (likely not). This would be a necessary step towards bringing a dinosaur back. However, even if we could get an intact genome and a proper eukaryotic host cell was found and amenable to genome transfer, all we get is a living and most likely somatic dinosaur cell. We would then need to figure out how to epigenetically reprogram this cell into a pluripotent state, similar to an ES cells. Then we would have to trick the cell to begin development (this would not be easy) and implant it into a suitable host that can carry the animal to term. Then we would need to figure out how to care for it and feed it and not kill it since we know nothing of their immune system and susceptibility to disease. We can't do step one yet, and this list contains the problems I thought of within three minute, imagine how many problems in an hour, and unknown ones (many!!) we can't think of. Future perhaps, not likely without tremendous advances that have alluded scientists for centuries.

Right now it is apparently not possible. A scientist in Japan has been trying for several years to bring back a mammoth from frozen tissue and so far has not been successful. Bringing back a dinosaur would be a much greater challenge since they have been gone for so many millions of years and there is no intact body to be found like in the case of the frozen mammoth.

This has been argued many times over to being possible but I am not sure.

It would be great to bring back saber tooth tigers, wooly mammoths and dinosaurs.
