The one room outdoors with a 1/4 moon on the door?

One house I live in as a child had a WPA outhouse.
President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” depression recovery plan included make-work projects like the Works Progress Administration ( WPA) . And The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

The WPA built thousands of high quality outhouses across the nation. They were more substantial and sanitary then most. Ours was a solid made building on a concrete slab with a wrought iron stool and factory made seat and cover.

I sat on grandma's so long they came looking for me. There was a knot hole up high and a lizard peering thru it and down at me. I was just sure if I moved it would jump on my head. It was a 2 holer and no smell from using lots of lime. I had one at the cabin I lived in on the mountain in 92/93. I used a 'thunder mug' at night and shoveled my way to the outhouse in the morning. I have pictures of it after a big snow storm it looked like a vanilla icecream cone. My Va relatives all had them in the 40's and 50's.

Sure, except ours was a "deluxe" model.

The outhouse was built as part of the storage shed, with a stall indoors for us females (out of the wind, but still not warm by any means), and outdoors for the men (facing north too, the poor buggers!).

And since my parents regularly put lime and enzyme "pucks" down into the hole, it didn't smell bad either--not even in high summer!

Oh yes, many times. We had indoor plumbing but lived in a rather rural area on the edge of a big city. Many of our neighbors and my friends had outdoor toilets. Used even worse than that when in the army out in the field. Not only that, it seems like our squad was always assigned the task of setting up and taking down the latrine. Setting up is not too bad but taking it down is ...

ROFLOL! I did not expect this question! lol! Actually, no, we always had indoor facilities; however, some folks did not and so I have had to occupy that "one room with the 1/4 moon on the door!" More times than I cared too!

Your question cracked me up! A star for you!...lol, a full one.

Yes we did and my brothers talked me into following them up the apple tree and then we crawled out on of top of that outhouse, well, as boys will they left me stranded there and I had to stay until my dad got home from work. I cant remember my age but it was pre-school maybe 3 or 4 years old. funny I was just sharing that memory with someone the other day.

No. But when visiting relatives in South Dakota in 1995, I was caught in one while a tornado headed our way. To this day I've never had a need for a product like Ex-Lax.

AH, the little house out behind. I've only had to use them in parks and stuff but when I was young there were still lots of them around, alot of them still being used. We used to go out on Halloween and move them just barely back off the hole. hehehehe
