Ok well have you ever had a older piece of metal jewlery and it gets this HORRIBLE stink to it?!?! what it is? is it safe?

Also the backs of some of my earrings have this blueish green looking mold on them. Its pretty weird. some of them are rusted. is this safe to wear?

I was talking to my 13 year old daughter about it, and she noticed this too.

thanks

1] the 'stink' is from the accumulation of body fluids/skin cells
2] jewelry, especially earrings, should be wiped off periodically with alcohol and Qtips.[ peroxide can eventually harm the metal - notice the fizzing ] to remove sweat, oils, skin cells, and dirt. Do not use alcohol on pearls or other soft stones, or emeralds [ surprisingly fragile ]
3] 'safe' depends on what it is - if all of it cleans off, it's safe.
If all of it comes off the post but not the backs, throw out backs and buy replacement backs.
a] if it is still blue-green, it's brass instead of gold or very, very cheap gold
b] if rust remains, throw it out
Now get a big bottle of alcohol, Qtips, and earrings, and have a cleaning party.

Green is mold so it can wash off=still can wear it. brown or an orangeish color means rust=don't wear it. It's stinks because it has your old fluids on the metal.
