I remember saying those things as a child, but I never believed them. I watched an interesting show on the Discovery Channel about the tsunami. There was one particular group of natives (I can't remember what island they lived on), who believed that when their God was displeased, he would shake the trees and cause the ocean to meld with the land. On the day of the tsunami, they felt the trees shake, and immediately took action and ran for higher ground. Every one of these relatively primitive people survived when so many others perished. For them, the "myth" was absolutely true.
