Dark matter has always been here since the Creation of the Universe..We just could not see it but we feel it ;Whitout Dark matter Gravity Energy would not exist.
Einstein had the description of the The Unified force in his cosmological constant. however unfortunately he was swayed by Hubble and abandoned the idea ,saying the Cosmological constant was a big blunder.
Now Scientist discovered that its not a blunder, but a real description of what is happening in the behavior of the Universe. Einstein was right after all about dark matter.

The main theory today says that dark matter exists around galaxies. However, there are modifications to the law of gravity that have been proposed that do not require dark matter to explain those things dark matter has been used to explain. These MOND theories are not (as yet) well accepted because they require a lot of fine tuning to work at all, but they are being actively investigated.

If dark matter does exist, there is the question of what it is made of. The best ideas right now are that it is either a subatomic particle called an axion or a supersymmetric version of known particles. The least massive supersymmetric particle would be stable and would also only interact weakly with ordinary matter, so is a good candidate for the dark matter. Unfortunately, the particle theories on which these ideas are based have not been shown to be correct in any other predictions (as yet).

From what I have read on the subject, Dark matter does exist although there are various hypotheses on what exactly it is comprised of. They have deduced this from the observable gravitational effects of unseen matter. As far as having enough dark matter to induce a big crunch doesnt seem likely being that our present knowledge tells us the universe is accelerating apart not slowing down.

dark matter PROBABLY exists. we cant prove is because we cant see it. and as for 'reconstructing' into a pinpoint, thats not what dark matter does.

dark matter was pustulated because the universe is expanding faster and faster instead of slowing down. and that doesn against newtons laws of motion, so something had to be behind it, thats where dark matter comes in. so dark matter would cause the universe to grow, not implode in on itself.
