Evolution.
Something like this:
Through the mechanisms of natural selection organisms evolved the ability sexually reproduce. When multi-cellular organisms evolved fertilisation of the female by the male resulted in the production of embryos. In some organisms, because it was advantageous in their environment the embryos where combined with a yolk sac eventually these where laid together outside the organism as an egg. Eventually after a long time a descendant of this organism evolved into a hen, which lays eggs.
In other words: the organism and the egg, but originally just the organism.

Well, it all depends on whether you believe in God or not...if you believe the bible to be true (which I do!!!) then it's obvious the chicken came first because he created animals even before people. A chicken lays eggs. If the egg came first, what if it had been sitting there for a long time...wouldn't it be rotten? LOL I think God made the chickens to lay the eggs so man would know he was always provided for and getting fresh food. :)

The first chicken egg came before the first chicken, so the egg. The first chicken egg was just not laid by a true chicken.

That's like asking," what came first? The wing or the chicken." They came together in one package.
The single cell came first though and that is basically what an egg is, a return to the single cell animal and every step of embryology of the egg is a step through evolution. Indeed, the chicken fetus like all fetus have gills at one point.

OK, Seriously:
Since we have to define the last mutation
that defines 'chicken`, as the thing that created the chicken, - the egg.

depends if you believe in God or evolution. God made the first chicken, but people think that reptiles were laying eggs (dinosaurs are reptiles) before chickens came around.

it is impossible to tell because by the time man developed the ability to speak and record the chicken had been around for centuries and unless a time machine is invented we shall never know.
