perry cheated the game on the field. he broke the rules, yet he's in the hof. cobb was a racist who stabbed someone and hurt people on the basepaths. rose gambled on his team to win. and bonds broke no rules. if perry and cobb are in, rose and bonds should be in too. period.

Agree. With or without steroids, Bonds has HOF talent. As far as Rose, he was a hit machine. Bonds will get in, but Rose will have problems getting in because Sir Bart Giamatti was an ivy league idealist snob that butchered Rose's reputation into shreds.

If you want to look at it that way, here's my interpretation.
Gaylord Perry was famous for his spit ball, as were a bunch of other guys. Since Perry (etc) got into the hall of fame based on numbers, (ie; strike outs, games won, and e.r.a.) you would have to consider how these stats were influenced by cheating.
Ty Cobb, while he was not going to win any "most gentlemanly" awards did nothing against the rules to influence the outcome of the game. As far as I know he never corked his bats, altered a baseball or anything like that.
Pete Rose bet on his team to win. Again no points for personality, but his objective was to win ballgames. I assume he did not bet on every game but always looked like he tried to win them all.
Bonds is a great player, no question, without steroids could have made it to the HOF and got greedy. Same as McGuire, Sosa, Polmaro, etc to some extent. The question is the same as with Perry, how much did cheating (steroids) add to their stats and what can you do about it without knowing the full answers? If you accept Bonds etc. as in the HOF what about Jose Canseco? He has the numbers to get in. Where do you draw the line?
My short answer is cheaters out. Cobb and Pete Rose in.

You make an excelent point. And let us not forget how Mark McGwire was shunned by the writers. Let us also not forget that Tris Speaker is also in the HOF.

Gypsy and cme: apparently you are not aware that Cobb and Tris Speaker were told by Judge Landis that if they made this their last year they would not have to face the disgrace of being exposed as cheaters. Cobb and Speaker were leaders of one of sports biggest gambling rings ever directly effecting the outcome of games. Probably effected the outcome of championships for two decades. Although rumors of Cobb killing a black man or playing the game 'dirty' are grossly exagerated, he was a notorious gambler.

Get off the Cobb racist angle! that was 100 years ago when everyone was a freakin' racist! He was an ****** like Bonds* but he didn't cheat the game like Bonds*. Spitters and scuffing have always been as much a part of the game as stealing signs. Should we kick everyone out of the game for stealing signs too?

Face it! The so-called "Hall of Fame" isn't! They should admit it is all contaminated and plant ivy around it and nail it shut. I don't ever want to hear about the stupid hall of shame. it is a crazy notion that didn't work out. Like Selig didn't work out as comish. Today he really topped his earlier screwups. All meaningless. Who are those guys all juiced up and whacked out? Not anybody I am interested in.
