Rarely, of course, and it's really a dumb idea.

It's the only base that you can overrun. What does sliding do? Slow you down. What is there to be gained by losing some speed in a race for first base.

I'm a little surprised it has caught on the way it has.

The chances of a MLB player sliding into first base are almost non-existent. Since it is the only base one is allowed to run through, it almost never happens. Unless facing a 1st baseman that is going for a high tag-out near the bag, a slide wouldn't be necessary. If I were to guess on a percentage, I'd say less than 1% slide into first base.

sliding into 1st is not worth the risk, but if you can keep your legs pumping as you bend over you can reach the base slightly faster by touching it with your hand, but as soon as you stop your legs and dive, you are losing speed and sliding only slows you down more. Best to practice hitting the closest edge and run right thru the bag.

less than 1% you take away speed when you drag yourself on the ground. why would you slow yourself down when you can over run the bag? However if you're talking about a man on first taking a lead and a pick off is attempted he will slide back about 75% of the time.

Players dont do it on a regular basis.

They olny do it when its a real emergancy.

To this year I have olny seen someone slide into 1st once.

How many times do people slide into first on a daily basis? 0.5 percent.

well off a hit, it's very rare b/c your really better of just running through... i'd say 0.3%. if you mean like hes on first, maybe attempting to go to second....its probably more around 25%
