Look on-line for aqaurium fish rescues in your area. There are numerous agencies that will gladly take the fish. This is your best bet.
If the rescue idea does not work, then I would suggest craigslist.com, local newspaper ads, etc. as a back-up.
I highly doubt you'll find a pet store that will take the fish back. Remember, never release it into the wild. Releasing store bought animals and fish into the wild costs tax payers billions of dollars annually when Fish and Game authorities have to constantly remove them from the wild.
Also, please do not kill your fish by flushing it or freezing it. It's not the fish's fault you don't want it anymore.

Freezing a fish isn't humane, and please don't kill it before you've looked at all available options for passing it on- as someone said before, it doesn't deserve to die because you don't find it entertaining anymore!
The most humane way to euthanise a fish is to use clove oil as an anaesthetic- put the fish in a saucepan/bowl/whatever you prefer of tank water, and then add approx. 3 drops of clove oil. The fish should start to fall asleep. If it hasn't yet, add a couple more drops. Once the fish is lying on the bottom, entirely out cold, you can freeze it or behead it or something similar. This is the most humane way to kill a fish, as it feels nothing, and simply goes to sleep. However, you do make sure you do something to fully kill the fish once it is asleep, otherwise even with really heavy doses of clove oil they can wake up, which can be extremely distressing for them.

I would have to first of all agree that releasing it is the worst possible thing to do.
If the pet stores you talked with are the major chains (Petco, Petsmart) it's their company policy not to take fish from anyone but a distributor, so that would have been an automatic "no", but have you asked at privately owned stores as well? They are more likely to deal with local breeders and to take unwanted fish, provided they have the room to take them. You might want to try this option if you haven't.
Besides craigslist, you might also try freecycle: http://www.freecycle.org/ - it a listing of things by city or region of things people are giving away. Also, see if there are any local aquarium clubs near where you live - one of their members may be interested. Here's a state by state listing for local clubs: http://fins.actwin.com/dir/clubs.php?c=1
It may not be something you want to consider at this point, but the pirahna may have been more interesting had your son gotten more than one - pirahanas are schooling fish, and tend to be shy if you only have a single individual. They're better kept in groups of 6+.

a few suggestions......
put it on craigslist.com and see if someone will take it off of your hands. if u aren't familiar with craigslist, it is a place to list various items for sale or for free in the area in which live. since the pet store option didn't work, when my fish are sick, i put them in the freezer to give them a more humane death than the "down the toilet" way. my fish are a lot smaller than a piranha though. try craigslist. good luck.

It`s not the fishes fault you hate it. If you didnt want it you shouldnt have gotten it for your son in the first place.
My first answer is suck it up and care for the fish until he lives out the rest of his life. Why should his life end because you hate it, he didnt do anything to you.
My second answer is to use clove oil before you freeze it, or it will be a very painful, stressful death for the poor fish.

How do you humanely "get rid" of a cat, dog, rabbit, snake or child? You find a home for it. Why do you suppose a fish is any less important or alive? Find your local aquarium society, I'm positive they'll buy them or adopt them. SOME pet stores will take them. Or you could find homes for them yourself or sell them on the internet.

There are alot of people out there that will take it off your hands. Go to some of the message boards and do some posting and tell them what area you live in and you will probably get a few bites.....no pun intended!lol

there are tons of people that really want a pirrahna, but you have to sort out the ones who will give it a good home or the ones who won't take proper care of it.....if you put an add in the paper, again, if you want it to have a good home for it you should meet them first to make sure they are a suitable home

Try to put it in newspapers, ask a friend if they want it or call local pet stores. I'm sure you'll get a response soon.
