I just bought this thing and installed it per the included instructions. I even did the whole setting the jumper to "Master" and my regular DVD-ROM drive's jumper to "Slave". I popped in a blank Imation 4.7GB 4x DVD+RW and the little pop-up screen came up as usual. However, it referred to it as a blank CD. I looked at it funny and closed it out passing it as a blunder by Microcrap in failing to write one of its shell files correctly. I went to My Computer so I could open the drive to drag some stuff I need to burn onto the blank DVD+RW. There's no label labeling it a DVD+RW, and when I tried to drag files onto it to burn them, it gives me a message about there being an error in copying the file. Yet when I put in a regular CD+/-RW, it works fine. I checked Windows Update, looked for driver updates, changed the write speed, you name it. Nothing worked. I can't return it either. Wal-Mart won't take back this kind of merchandise if it has been opened. Anyone know what the problem is?

Make life easier. Just use Nero or Roxio for burning and Power DVD for movie viewing. Win XP driver is mainly for CD drives, that is why DVD drives typically come with Nero and Cyberlink's Power DVD bundled.

What software are you using to write to the drive? I just came across a similar problem with a version of Roxio/Sonic Record Now. It turns out that there is a bug in the software and it does not identify the drive correctly. In this case the drive was DVD-RAM and at first it was being ID as a CD-ROM. There is a patch on the Roxio web site that once run fixes the problem and lets the drive act like a DVD. The patch is called pxengine2. Hope this helps.

Well since it is working with a CD but not with a DVD+RW then it seems like either the drive only supports DVD-RW or else the drive is defective.

Are you sure about walmart not accepting a return because last I checked that policy only applies to software?

Regardless, you will have a manufacturer's warranty on the item.

Try a different brand of media and try a dvd-r and see if that works.

Hello,
I have a very very very similar problem; I'm using Dell PC with Win XP SP2 and Philips DVD+RW media, trying to burn with Nero.
I've found on Windows Hardware Compatibility list support for LH-20A1PX(KL0M); Not sure if that's the same as we have.
On liteonit-website, I don't see this LH-20A1PX, only LH-20A1P.
May not be much of help, but what PC, media and burning system you use?
Bregs, Lucas

Have you tried formatting the blank DVD disk first?
