The generic meaning of fan fiction (abbreviated fanfic) is fiction written by fans of an author's work, rather than the author himself/herself. In addition to Harry Potter, Star Wars and Star Trek also have notable fanfic communities.

Fanfic doesn't necessarily follow the events of the books, so it can be based on pretty much anything the author wants to write about. For example, there's a Harry Potter fanfic that has Angelina Johnson moving to Europe after she gets pregnant by Fred Weasley.

It's basically just... stories made up by fans. For example, you like the pairing of Harry and Ginny. Then you can write anything about them that doesn't necessarily have to happen in the book.

You can check out over 300, 000 fanfictions for Harry potter at... well, where else? http://www.fanfiction.net

"Fan fiction" is the name given to a story written about characters in another (well-known) story, such as the characters in Harry Potter or the film series Nightmare on Elm Street - written by the fans of the original story.

No. FANS write it about FICTION in books. Like where Harry gets married to Luna or something... people write twists. Here's a good site for it:

Fanfictions are stories based on real books and mixing the characters or setting of the book with our own ideas. There is a site, "www.fanfiction.com" which you can post your fanfictions on. Its perfectly legal!
