If your partner is an alcoholic, I don't think there's very much YOU can do, except encourage him to get the help that he (or she) needs from a professional or a support group of some kind. Look up in the phone book or on Yahoo! local for organizations that offer AA meetings, and try to get your partner to attend.
My sister wasted years of her life trying to "help" her alcoholic partner by just living with it and asking him periodically to stop drinking after he refused to seek treatment. She is now filing for divorce and pursuing assault charges for the physically abusive relationship that developed after her husband failed to seek help. I only tell you this so that you don't get trapped in a dangerous relationship; remember that it takes more than love to make a relationship work, and if your partner becomes abusive because of his/her alcoholism, you are not obligated to stay.

Speak to your doctor and he will put you in touch with local organisations who can help both of you in the way of counselling and support. He will also be able to organise detox for your partner if and when they are willing. Alternatively, you should be able to pick up leaflets at the surgery, local council offices and libraries. Get help even if it is only for yourself as you will need the support. I have been through this. Feel free to e-mail me if you like. God Bless :)
