Take the lid off of the tank and look inside...if you have a black flapper (the thing that a chain pulls up to let the water out when you flush the toilet), turn the water off at the wall valve (the 'angle-stop' = water supply shutoff valve), put on gloves, remove the flapper, put it in a Baggie, close the Baggie and go to a hardware store or home center and get an exact-sized replacement, preferably a red flapper instead of another black one. Install the new flapper, turn the water back on. To clean the bowl, add a cup of bleach, swish it around and let it 'sit' there for a few hours, then flush it. DON'T put bleach or a bleach-tab product in the tank, since they 'eat' the rubber flapper, causing them to deteriorate and leak. Finally, flush the toilet a few times a week.

Toilets just accumulate dust from the air that settles in them & it migrates to the sides. Plus water stagnation. You can clean it with a bowl cleaner called (The works ) or a simular cleaner. As fer as keeping it clean, If it sits and is not used it will get dirty again and there id not much you can do. AS some stupid dope suggested. DO NOT FLUSH & REMOVE WATER FROM BOWL! You will ge dangerous sewer gasses coming up from the sewer line.

sounds like you could pop a descaling tablet down at night and this shouldnt have to be repeated for at least a fortnight, but you could be getting this as it is not used a lot so perhaps you could go in a give it a flush every so often just to stop the water from going stagnent, good luck

It may be the pipes. Are they Galvanized? Not using it a lot the water in the pipes may be doing something. IF, there a Bathtub in that Room try turning it on full for about 5 minutes and see if it not flush out the lines. This all I know to try.

the only thing that worked for me was zud. it comes in powder or liquid. scoop out some water before you use it. you will need to scrub. once clean, make it a habit to flush it once every day, no matter what.
you may also want to try kaboom yellow. they claim it works.

If it feels like sandpaper, use a pumice stone on it and scrub it all off. It's lime build up and then use the descaler and that should fix it up.

Replace the rubber drain stopper it is disinegrating and leaving black rubber ink in the bowl. If you touch it it will get black all over your hands, so wear rubber gloves.
