It depends on how it's used. There is "political asylum" which is basically a type of refugee who is afraid to stay in their own country and is asking for help and aid in another country because they are afraid they will be harmed or killed.
And then there is the institution where blind, insane or orphans are cared for.

asylums are not nut houses, they are places where old people live, is their own community, when a person is getting too old family mambers might choose to put the in asylums, where the have the professional care of nurses etc.
