In the ancient legends vampires had a great many powers. They could beyond their incredibly long life spans, they had superhuman strength and were virtually indestructable, iny being able to be harmed by sunlight, certain religious symbols, holy water and the ever popular stake through the heart. It was believed in someplaces that they could transform into a bat, a wolf, or a mist. The could also telepathically control their victimsa and some legends even had them in possession of the ability to manipulate magical energies with great effect adn efficiency.

In more modern belief, they are not really believed to have such great powers. The are supposed to be stronger than the normal human, faster too and to have some limited degree of mental control over others, and perhaps some aiblity to interact with some creatures of the night.

Some in modern belife are also what are called psychic vampires, those who, rather than drink blood simply drain the life esence of those around them. They are reputed to have access to greater levels of power than their blood drinking counterparts.

As to their being able to live in times past...the psychic vampire has alwyas had the advantage as they can drain from anyone, anywhere with no one even aware that it is happening, and leaving no trace other than people feeling inexplicably weaker than normal. That has not changed and even in modern times they aer able to feed at need with no one the wiser.

Vampires have more powers than you could ever comprehend. Heres my List I hgot from modiftying the info on various wikipedia articles (Its not just copy/pasted, I added my own stuff and edited out the stupid stuff). Its not for any particular kind of vampire, just for the archtypical vampire at the peak of its power. Most vampires possess only a fraction of these abilities. Only the most powerful have them all.
