I have no clue. I call it by both names, because I've supported ManUtd for 4-5 years now. It's always been called that here in the USA, so I honestly don't know. I feel weird sometimes because I hear someone say football, and I'm like, American football, or soccer football. If I had to take a guess, it would be a bit funny. Since soccer players wear long socks over shin guards, maybe that's why we call it soccer. You know, for the socks? lol I like both names. Good luck searching for the answer.

Because we already have a sport called football which is played with a pigskin and is the most popular sport in the United States! When the rest of the world uses the term football for soccer it confuses me!

bcuz we already named football b4 soccer became popular over here.
it was called football bcuz b4 there was no passing. only running and kicking. therefore, since u use feet for both of those, football makes sense.
but yes it would make things a lot easier to call soccer football
